Choosing The Pan That's Right For You

Gold Prospecting PanWith so many different types of prospecting pans available, choosing one can prove to be a challenge, especially if this is your first one. There are basic small pans with no real distinctive features, while others are large with several ridges or grooves constructed into the sides of them. So, how are you supposed to know which pan to choose without trying it first? Lets take a closer look at some of the things you should look for in a gold prospecting pan.

Naturally, common sense should tell you that a larger pan is capable of prospecting through a greater amount of paydirt; therefore, you'll uncover more gold. The only problem is that large pans can become burdensome to carry around and work in the water. After placing some dirt and gravel in it, you might have a hard time clearing it because of its large size. This typically isn't a problem for more experienced prospectors, but beginners will certainly run into trouble with them.

Gold pans typically range in sizes of 10 inches to 17 inches in diameter. A good pan to start out with a size 14 inch, as this seems to be a "happy medium" that works well in a variety of conditions. However, you may want to pick up a smaller and larger pan to supplement your gold prospecting efforts. Larger pans are helpful for going through pockets of large gravel rocks, while smaller pans are ideal for areas with pure sand. Trust me, there's absolutely nothing wrong with bringing along multiple pans when you're prospecting for gold.

Many people underestimate the importance of the right color prospecting pan. If you choose a pan that's painted in a color too close to gold, then you're going to have a hard time picking out the nuggets and flakes. However, a pan that contrasts well to gold'shiny yellow appearance will make it ten times easier to spot valuable flakes and nuggets. My personal favorite color for a prospecting pan is forest green, as this allows the gold to stand out with ease. Some prospectors may prefer black pans, but I don't recommend them simply because black sand blends into it. Stick with a green pan and you'll find gold is much easier to spot.

Gold Panning PlaceHow To Use a Prospecting Pan

Whether you have a small, medium or large prospecting pan, they all work in the same manner. You'll take it to a river or stream where you believe gold to be and scoop up some of the sand and gravel from the bottom. Ideally, you want to fill your pan from a pocket area where the water travels fast and then slows down, as gold tends to settle here. Once you've filled up your pan about 3/4 of the way full with the gravel and sand, completely submerge under the water and gently shake it in a circular motion. This should hopefully remove all the large rocks and break up the smaller stuff. Don't worry, as gold is heavy and should fall to the bottom of the pan instead of splashing out.

After submerging and shaking your pan under the water, bring it up to the surface to let the water out. This will give you a chance to remove any visible large rocks that are obviously not gold. Once you're ready to continue, dip it back down underneath the water and continue shaking it. Now, however, you can start shaking it at an angle to help the smaller rocks and sand float away. Take it back up the surface and continue the process until you're left with black sand and gold flakes.
